I was told many years ago, the process of telling one's life story can help identify the core values and beliefs of that person. Sharing it will pass on valuable lessons to others. That's why I decided to express my beliefs and explain why I've joined the zero-waste fight! I hope you enjoy and share your life's stories with others too.
When I was 14 years old, I can remember my dad asking me "where would you like to go on vacation this year?" He told me, "Teresa you can chose anywhere in the United States." With out any hesitation I specifically told him, "I really want to go to Yellowstone National Park to see Old Faithful!" My dad started planning our vacation, and it was one that I will never forget. The vacation was just perfect. For ten days we went horseback riding in the Rocky Mountains, slept in a cabin on a local ranch, and explored the amazing sites Yellowstone had to offer.
I believe Yellowstone opened my eyes to indescribable beauty, but more importantly, it left me asking myself what can I do to preserve this area? In Yellowstone Park, I remember reading a quote from Teddy Roosevelt that stated, "To waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in the days of our children the very prosperity we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed." Afterwards, I was inspired to learn about what I can do to help protect the environment. I had not realized that environmental degradation was happening. Over time I came to understand environmental work was not about one area to protect, but about looking at ecosystems as a whole. For me it became about figuring out the underlying causes of complex environmental problems, and addressing real solutions.
When I matured and was in college I started becoming actively involved in environmental topics and reading about the natural world and discovering people people such as John Muir, Rachel Carson, and Henry David Thoreau. I began to wonder what I wanted to pursue in life. No matter what it would be, I knew it had to have an environmental focus. After graduating with a degree in Geography with an emphasis in Environmental Studies at the University of Missouri in 2003, I decided to relocate anywhere in the U.S to gain more expertise and perspective in the environmental field. Then after many years of working in the conservation field; I finally found my niche while working at a local Conservation Corps in the San Francsico. My work focused on supervising a recycling operation in the Presidio.
My drive to pursue to start my own business when I started coordinating and "greening"special events and festivals. After leading and co-leading several special events for a local Conservation Corps, I started networking and making connections within the industry. I thought to myself, why not start my own?
In short, Revolutionary Green has evolved over time. I really do find great joy diverting materials from the landfill, and raising awareness and perspectives regarding our use of resources to others. I have taken my learned knowlege and expertise of environmental education, special events coordintion, public relations, green event design, and creativity. My passion and drive to teach others about what they can do help make their event less wasteful and save money all at the same time, is a great reward of my business.
Remember: There's nothing to small to make a difference.
